Chronic Pain Introduction

Persistent face, mouth and jaw conditions can cause ongoing pain or other sensations, such as burning, tingling or numbness. Some conditions may also lead to changes that are visible to others. Living with these symptoms can affect many aspects of daily life, including eating, speaking, sleeping, working and socialising.


It is important to recognise that persistent pain can affect more than just your physical health. Many people experience frustration, worry, low mood or reduced confidence as they adapt to living with their condition. Some people also notice that their symptoms become more noticeable during times of stress or emotional distress.


This section of the website contains resources developed by the Psychology Service to support people living with persistent face, mouth and jaw conditions. The aim is not to eliminate pain or other sensations, but to help you understand your condition, develop helpful coping strategies, and reduce the impact it has on your daily life.


The resources are organised into two sections:

  • More Than a Mouth (MTAM) – resources designed to support people living with persistent orofacial pain and related conditions.
  • Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) – resources specifically developed for people experiencing Burning Mouth Syndrome.


You can explore these resources at your own pace and return to them whenever you find them helpful.
